The Supermarine Spitfire is one of the most famous aircraft to take part in World War II. Designed in the mid-1930s by R.J Mitchell he never saw it enter service as he died in 1937. However the aircraft went on to be produced in 24 variants totalling over 20,000 aircraft. Alongside the Hawker Hurricane it played a key role in the Battle of Britain. Alongside the beefy Hurricane the Spitfire is a slim and shapely aeroplane.
