The Folland Gnat, which first flew as a single-seat combat aircraft in 1959, was used by the RAF as an advanced flying trainer in the 1960's and 1970's. Its aerobatic qualities led to the formation of the Yellowjacks aerobatic team in 1964, leading in turn to the foundation of the world famous Red Arrows the following year. The display team replaced the Gnat with the Hawk in 1979. This example, XR977, is on display at the RAF Museum, Cosford.
