The Hawker Tempest was a development of the Typhoon with a new laminar-flow wing, wider undercarriage and other improvements. Designed in late 1941, prototypes were ordered shortly afterwards with a variety of engine specifications. The first flight took place in September 1942 but various engine problems delayed development. Nine months later the Tempest II, with a Bristol Centaurus radial engine, had its first flight but it was another 16 months before the aircraft started rolling off the production line. By the time the aircraft was ready for operations however, the war was over.
